3. Short description Department of Environmental Chemistry and Materials of Okayama University will open our campus on August 5 and 6, 2011 mainly for the high school students to get familiar with our policy and activity, and to enhance interest in chemistry among the younger generation.

Long description We, Department of Environmental Chemistry and Materials, Faculty of Environmental Science and Technology, Okayama University, Japan, will open our campus on August 5 and 6, 2011 as an annual event mainly for the high school students, their parents and teachers to get familiar with our policy and activity. The aim of our department is twofold: to prepare students for careers in environmental chemistry or environmental chemical engineering, and to provide the basic knowledge needed to address many of society's most pressing needs, such as tapping new source of energy, improving health, providing renewable substitutes for dwindling resources, and monitoring and protecting global environment. To accomplish its mission the department maintains an academic environment conducive to excellence in teaching and research in the fields of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, polymer chemistry and chemical engineering. For enhancement of interest in chemistry among the younger generation and increasing enthusiasm of chemists for a creative future, we will provide the chemistry demonstrations, including experiments for making fuel cell, solar cell, optical glass, plastics and lectures on green chemistry as a part of the IYC events.
